The Balkan History Association (BHA) aim is to bring together people and organisations interested in all aspects related to the history of the Balkan region. Therefore, BHA looks to create a community of specialists and professionals that would advance the knowledge about the area, through open dialogue and productive debate.

Membership of the association is markedly interdisciplinary and international, and BHA members seek to promote the study and teaching of history in all its forms and to foster communication and interaction among the Balkan community of scholars in the field.

As a non-profit scholarly organization, BHA promotes research and teaching in Balkan history, engages in public outreach, and supports its members’ professional needs. We offer a heartfelt welcome to all those with an interest in these activities, details of which can be found on this website.

BHA supports the collaboration with the pre-university and higher education institutions from Romania and other countries, and also the professional development of young, promising students and strengthens awareness of the importance and role of the history among the public.

BHA holds a lively and well-attended annual conference, encourages local and regional activities in support of its mission. The goals of the annual conference are to bring together the scholars who study various aspects of Balkan History.

BHA publishes a peer-reviewed online journal called Hiperboreea, which publishes articles in the field of History, written in English and occasionally French, and book reviews, or evaluations of scholarly conferences. Our focus is the study of Southeastern Europe, broadly defined as the states situated in the Balkan region. Without limiting its scope to a specific historical period or approach, the journal covers a wide range of topics, such as Cultural History, Political History, Military History, Social History, Economic History, and Archaeology, and encourages work on any historical period and with a multidisciplinary approach.

Hiperboreea is indexed in international databases such as Web of Science (ESCI), EBSCO, Scopus, CEEOL, ERIH PLUS, ProQuest, ProQuest Philosophy Database, Index Copernicus, JSTOR, Ulrich, WorldCat, Regesta Imperii, J-Gate, Persée, Modern Language Association International Bibliography, Bibliographical Information Base in Patristics, International Medieval Bibliography, International Bibliography of Humanism and the Renaissance, Columbia International Affairs Online, Romanian Academy Library. From 2020, Hiperboreea is published by the Pennsylvania State University Press.

Membership of the Balkan History Association is open to anyone with an interest in the Balkans, and, more generally, of South-East Europe.
