The webinar will introduce a series of epigraphic discoveries and reinterpretations that shed new light on the history of the Thracian kingdoms in the early third century BCE. Drawing on nearly two decades of interdisciplinary research presented in his recent monograph Epigraphic “Shades” from Hellenistic Thrace (Franz Steiner Verlag, 2026), Konstantin Boshnakov combines traditional historical and philological approaches with advanced photographic techniques, including ultraviolet and raking-light imaging, to recover inscriptions previously overlooked, misinterpreted, or considered lost. Particular attention will be given to discoveries from the Tomb of Kazanlak, Seuthopolis, the Smyadovo Tomb, and the Tomb of the Caryatids at Sveshtari. Beyond these individual discoveries, the webinar will explore the methodological challenges of reconstructing ancient history from fragmentary evidence and reconsider the political history, chronology, and dynastic connections of Early Hellenistic Thrace.
