Armenian communities began to settle in the Black Sea region as early as during Middle Ages. According to the legend, this great exodus started in 11th century following the conquest of the well-known city of Ani; the reality, however, is far more complex.Armenian merchants arriving from the Crimean Peninsula and Constantinople have received safe-conduct passes from the Polish kings or nobles. Armenian quarters with their own self-government were soon established in Lviv, Lutsk, Lublin, Zamość, Kamianets-Podilskyi and many other urban centers. Description of these Armenian neighborhoods as well as the functioning of Armenian communities (including customary law, religious practices, vernacular language etc.) were included in Armenian sources written in Galicia. Their thorough reading offers us the broader scope for understanding the Black Sea historical-cultural mosaic.
