The aim of this study is to shed light on the numerous Bulgarian merchants originating from the Bulgarian lands under Ottoman rule, both south and north of the Balkan Range, and on their social and entrepreneurial networks. The durable networks they managed to establish and maintain in their native communities and across the wider Bulgarian interior were closely connected to Wallachia and Moldavia (Romania after 1859). Bulgarian entrepreneurs used these networks primarily to conduct their day-to-day business activities. However, there are also some intriguing examples of their use for mutual assistance. Both published and predominantly unpublished sources (commercial and private correspondence, commercial ledgers, contracts, and brief notes) have been thoroughly investigated. They encompass the time frame from the 1840s to the late 19th century.
