The primary objective of the presentation is to elucidate the various instances of ‘archaic place names’ in Romania in comparison to the situation in the surrounding regions, above all Bulgaria and South Slavic in general. It is also pertinent to consider the West Balkan region, where Illyrian serves as the substratum. Various data from the Czech-Slovak area are discussed and shown to be relevant. The presentation will also touch on the Pre-Indo-European survivals, a situation that has been rarely examined. Some case studies will be chosen.
